Organic and Natural Connecticut products offered at a fraction of retail prices. We make handmade soap, assorted natural soap products, beeswax candles and our latest product: DON'T BUG ME! natural insect repellent.
Soaps have been made for thousands of years. In fact, the first soaps were accidentally made by fat dripping into the ashes of cooking fires. It was only a few generations ago (Grandma's?!) that lard and lye were the main ingredients in "homemade" soap. Today, we have the benefit of expertise and a cornucopia of oils, butters, and other ingredients from around the world with which to craft a rich, moisturizing and non-irritating soap.
Soap is made by saponifying a fat or oil with an alkali. "Saponifying" oil and fat into soap is one of the oldest and simplest chemical reactions known to humankind. Here's a little science background: A fat or oil is a "triglyceride," which means that three fatty acids of various carbon lengths are attached to a glycerine backbone. The alkali is sodium hydroxide, made by running electricity through salt water. The saponification process is a simple one-step reaction with no waste generated: the glycerine is split off from the fatty acids, and the fatty acids combine with the sodium to form soap, while the hydroxide forms water. The result is soap, glycerin and water (all alkali is consumed and therefore absent in our soaps).
Quality soap-making consists in great part of choosing the right proportions of the right oils with their different fatty acids. Most commercial soap manufacturers skimp on quality because of cost and use lots of tallow from beef fat with a little bit of coconut or palm kernel oil. Our unsurpassed soaps are made with olive, coconut, castor and/or avocado, palm, and jojoba oils along with shea and cocoa butters, instead of tallow, and contain three to four times more coconut oil than commercial soaps. Saponified coconut oil generates high-lather cleansing even in hard water because it has shorter-chain saturated fatty acids. Castor, olive and palm oil-based soaps make a mild, smooth, creamy lather because these oils contain longer-chain unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fatty acids. Shea butter and avocado oil add vitamins and moisture enhancing qualities.
Yes, you pay a bit more for our handcrafted soap but you do so with the understanding that only the finest NATURAL ingredients are in the lather that is generated against your skin. We use no dyes, whiteners, or synthetic fragrances — only pure and high-quality essential oils. What greater value is there for cleaning your skin?
Give our soap a try for a week. Treat yourself to what many customers have come to see is the best available soap for your skin.
All of our soaps are made from saponified vegetable oils, honey, beeswax, and other natural ingredients for those seeking beneficial skin care. Many of our soaps have no added fragrance. When we do scent them we use only pure essential oils. Made in small batches by cold process, the soap is poured into wooden molds, cut by hand, and allowed to cure for three to six weeks.
Olive oil is a nourishing moisturizer that allows the skin to breathe without clogging pores. Sweet almond oil is an excellent emollient that enriches the skin with vitamins. Two other oils we use are coconut oil, which generated a high quality lather, and palm oil, for increasing the hardness of the soap bar. Oatmeal is a natural skin protectant and one of the few natural ingredients that helps soothe and relieve minor skin irritations. Lavender has antiseptic and soothing properties, and is a natural insect repellent.
Our promise to our customers is to use only natural ingredients in the products we make. Look closely at the ingredients list on many soaps out there, both commercial and handcrafted varieties, and you may discover it is scented with fragrance oils or perhaps colored with synthetic dyes. If you're looking for a strawberry or blueberry bar you'll need to look elsewhere, as it is not possible to derive a natural essential oil from many fruits, flowers, etc...
We know some of you love "smelly good" soaps. But there are many that reach for the detergent, dishwashing liquid, or... bath soap. So for you 'unscented' lovers, several soaps have no added essential oils to fragrance the bar. This is not to say they have no smell. You'll still detect, say, a little honey, or in the Honey Lavender bar, the faint scent released by the ground lavender buds. To put it simply, these aren't your "Bed, Bath, and Beyond" fare!
Beeswax is 100% all-natural fuel derived from Mother Natures flowers. It is non toxic, naturally aromatic, amber colored and emits beneficial negative ions when burned. These ions clean our environment by removing positively charged dust, dust mite debris, pollen, mold, mildew and toxic emissions from building materials and paint.
Our candles are less expensive than big box stores, such as Williams-Sonoma.
